PURSUING
THE ART OF LAPAROSCOPIC UROLOGIC SURGERY |
|
Laparoscopic
surgery is the latest technical development
in the field of urology. It is now
about 10 years and practically all open
surgical procedures have been done with
this technique. This involves a telescope,
attached to a camera which shows internal
structures on a TV monitor. The surgery
is done by special instruments which are
passed through holes - So called Key Hole
surgery. The advantages are many -
|
 |
-
No large cut, so less pain, less wound
infection, less need for painkillers
- Blood loss is minimal as the view
is many times better than by naked eye.
- More precise dissection due to magnification
- Cosmetically much better
- Less handling of organs -an advantage
in cancer surgery. |
|
Some of the main
applications of this technique are removal
of kidney due to disease or cancer, correction
of obstructions like UPJ obstruction.
Lately, one of the most useful and common
application is for Prostate cancer removal
by laparoscopy. Again, the advantage
is the precision and minimal blood loss.
In India, laparoscopic
surgery is still lagging behind and only
few urologists are pursuing it as their
main field.
Dr. Ajay Sharma took up this specialty
In 1998 and got advanced training in laparoscopic
urologic surgery at Cleveland Clinic, Ohio,USA,which
is the second best urology center in America.
He then visited Paris and learned Laparoscopic
surgery for Prostate cancer at Institut
Mutuliste Montsouris, this technique
was developed in 1998.
Dr.Sharma
has performed many laparoscopic operations
on kidney, ureter,Bladder and for cancer
prostate. His experience in this field is
enough to enable him practically stop open
surgery.
